Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe.
A continuous monitoring system to measure the respiration of Crassostrea gigas has been developped. The metabolic function estimated by oxygen consumption has been monitored during periods of 24 h, without food, at a temperature constant of 15°C. Preliminary results showed that the mean percentage of oyster activities was 50 % with a high variability from 0 to 100 %. The number of activity periods per day (24 h) is function of the oysters with variation between 0 and 7.

Alimentation expérimentale de l'huître Crassostrea gigas à l'aide de navicules bleus Haslea ostrearia (Simonsen) de différentes tailles ArchiMer
Barille, Laurent; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Robert, Jean-michel.
The influence on the feeding physiology (clearance, filtration, ingestion, absorption) of the Japanese oyster Crassostrea gigas of low concentrations of suspended particulate matter (SPM ranging from 2 to 20 mg.l-l) and high food quality (mean organic fraction =54 %) was studied in the laboratory. Experimental diets were made up with three strains of the "blue diatom" Haslea ostrearia, which is responsible of the greening of oyster-ponds. The strains were characterized by different sizes (48, 65 and 98 µm respectively) but possessed the same density and biochemical composition. Clearance rate was found constant at 2.2 1.h(-l).g-l dry weight and therefore was not influenced by increasing seston load. Pseudofaeces production was observed for SPM...

Soletchnik, Patrick; Heral, Maurice; Razet, Daniel; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe.
Ecophysiological study was conducted on the japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) reared in Marennes-Oléron bay (France), during May 1992. Most of the somatic growth of the oyster occured during that month. The measurements were achieved from a removable laboratory stated in Le Chapus for 3 days at different tide level (coefficient of 49, 57, and 88). The food conditions were monitored through a computer with a continuous record of the turbidity during aIl the tidal cycle. In spite of an important variation between the food conditions in mean seston load, from 13,5 to 54,6 mg/!, the available organic matter ranged from 3 to 4,9 mg/l. The rate of organic matter in the water ranged 22 % to 9 %. The organic selection efficiency was significantly higher for the...

Comparison of growth of mussel, Mytilus edulis, on longline, pole and bottom culture sites in the Pertuis Breton, France ArchiMer
Garen, Pierre; Robert, Stephane; Bougrier, Serge.
Growth of the mussel, Mytilus edulis, was compared for the first time under three culture regimes, longline located in open sea, pole and on-bottom both situated on an intertidal flat, in the Pertuis Breton, on the Atlantic coastline of France. Mussel sampling was performed on a monthly basis over 1 year while monitoring of hydrobiological parameters was conducted on a biweekly basis. Fluctuation of environmental parameters showed a similar pattern on both sea and shore locations with generally higher concentration levels for the intertidal area compared with the open sea, i.e. 4.07 and 3.17 mg 1(-1) for particulate organic matter, 3.16 and 2 mug 1(-1) for chlorophyll-a, 58.43 and 38.72 mg 1(-1) for inorganic-N, respectively. A clear seasonal growth...

Cossa, Daniel; Abarnou, Alain; Andral, Bruno; Bougrier, Serge; Buestel, Dominique; Claisse, Didier; Hatt, Philippe-jacques; Stanisiere, Jean-yves.

Does the prevalence of Bonamia and Marteilia diseases be reduced on flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) of Atlantic and Mediterranean origin, when they are reared together with the Japanese oyster (Crassostrea gigas) in tidal ponds? ArchiMer
Bodoy, Alain; Bougrier, Serge; Geairon, Philippe; Garnier, Jacqueline; Boulo, Viviane; Heurtebise, Serge.
The flat oyster Ostrea edulis was originally reared in several regions of the European waters. The tidal saline ponds on the Atlantic coasts of France were highly productive before being hit by two consecutive epizooties. Parasitic diseases were described on this species, both of them leading 10 economic losses, as heavy mortalities have usually been recorded before the oysters reach the commercial size. Repeated experiments showed that the two diseases, Marteilia refringens and Bonamia ostreae are still active in this environment. Recently, some evidences were given that haemocytoblasts of Crassostrea gigas had the ability to lyze the Bonamia cells. Therefore, in an experiment of contiguous culture of the two species of oysters, the growth, mortality and...

Effect of the density of the culture and the depth on the seasonal variation of the biochemical composition of Crassostrea virginica in patuxent river (Chesapeake Bay) ArchiMer
Prou, Jean; Heral, Maurice; Goulletquer, Philippe; Forget, Maïté; Bougrier, Serge; Razet, Daniel.
The project of cultivation of oyster has been designed to evaluate the growth rate, the mortality, the reproductive effort, production and biochemical composition of the oyster function of the density and the depth. This plan was intended: - to build model of growth rate, - to demonstrate the action of the different parameters on growth rate (temperature, food effect...), - to evaluate the density effect to see if the available food could be a limiting factor, - to estimate the effect of the depth joined to the impact of the high turbidity near the bot tom, - to detect the mortality related to the prevalence of diseases. The project began in July 1989 by dredging 20 000 small oysters at the mouth of the Patuxent River near Cove Point. Three experimental...

Bougrier, Serge; Raguenes, Gerard; Bachere, Evelyne; Tige, Gilbert; Grizel, Henri.
The inability to rear the oysters C. gigas and O. edulis in certain Brittany waters has prompted us to conduct breeding trials with C. angulata C. gigas and their hybrids. Results have revealed that all the strains tested were sensitive to Tributyl tin (TBT), showing atnormal shell thickness and their growth was lower than C. gigas. In addition, C. angulata was still affected by the presence of the Iridovirus in France.

Haure, Joel; Baud, Jean-pierre; Bougrier, Serge.
Introducing new species for shellfish farming is essential for expanding farmers' markets and for minimising the pathological risks that endangers professional marine aquaculture activities, which traditionally rely on only one species. Ifremer's Aquaculture and Pathological Genetics (GAP) laboratory participates in the mollusc genetics network (REGEMO). Since 1989, this network has been carrying out a selection programme for resistance or tolerance to Bonamia ostreae in European flat oysters (Ostrea edulis) to revitalize cultivation of this species on a national level.

A European programme (GENEPHYS) was launched in 1996 to study the genetic basis and variability of physiological characters involved in growth in Crassostrea gigas. This research programme was a prerequisite for any genetic selection programme on physiological functions. Research groups from Ireland, England, Greece and France are involved in this project and participate in genetic analyses (allozymes and microsatellites) and physiological analyses (ecophysiology, enzymology, stress proteins). Ifremer at La Tremblade was responsible for producing the biological material while Ifremer-CREMA (human-influenced marine ecosystems research centre) was responsible for carrying out non-destructive physiological analyses.

Feeding responses of Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) to inclusion of different proportions of toxic dinoflagellates in their diet ArchiMer
Bardouil, Michele; Bohec, Madeleine; Bougrier, Serge; Lassus, Patrick; Truquet, Philippe.
An experimental flow-through system allowing determination of the feeding behaviour of individual molluscs was used to study oysters exposed to mixed diets composed of varying proportions of the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii and two strains (toxic and nontoxic) of the dinoflagellate Alexandrium larnarense. Our results show that, when compared to a T. weissflogii unialgal diet, even a diatomltoxic dinoflagellate ratio as low in biomass as 90/10 reduced clearance rates and biodeposit production by oysters. Consumption was slightly but significantly decreased for a 50/50 diatomltoxic dinoflagellate mixture. For the toxic dinoflagellate unialgal diet, ingestion, absorption and consumption were completely inhibited. Thus, the inclusion of low amounts of...
